Part-Time Web Developer

Greenheart International is a nonprofit committed to connecting people and planet to create a more peaceful and sustainable global community. We achieve this through a unique and diverse collection of programs fostering cultural exchange, eco-fair trade, volunteerism, personal development and environmentalism. Greenheart encompasses four main branches: CCI Greenheart, Greenheart Travel, Greenheart Shop, Greenheart Transforms, and two partners: Greenheart Music, and Greenheart Ibiza.

Greenheart International is on the look-out for a PHP Ninja to help with front-line support and WordPress development in the continued growth and maintenance of our websites.

The candidate must be able to guarantee 80 hours a month – most of which can be completed remotely and on a flexible basis, but during US CST office hours. If geographically possible, the candidate would ideally come into our Chicago offices once a week.

Qualifications:

  • Solid knowledge of PHP, HTML, CSS, JS goes without saying.
  • A deep knowledge and up-to-date understanding of WordPress.
  • Comfortable working on custom themes and plugin and should always use and follow WordPress standards when approaching and resolving problems.
  • Work in a flexible way that allows them to be available at short notice to step-in and help resolve issues quickly.
  • Be able to take on variable sized development tasks with planned deliverable dates.
  • Familiarity with Git file versioning and ideally WPEngine hosting platform.
  • Experience of Asana, Zendesk and offering technical client support.
  • Bonus points for knowledge of Big Commerce and other ecommerce platforms.

Greenheart International has several WordPress installs, most of which rely on a mixture of themes and plugins sourced from the wordpress.org repo, github and custom developed features.

Compensation: 80 hours on a monthly retainer basis @ $30 per hour.

Within CCI Greenheart, the High School Programs Department has J-1 visa designation by the U.S. Department of State to bring international high school students to the United States on a cultural exchange program that allows them to live with an American host family and attend high school for 5-10 months. CCI Greenheart’s J-1 program is dedicated to extending the mission of cultural understanding, environmental consciousness, and world peace by connecting enthusiastic international students and American host families. As the only non-profit, eco-conscious J-1 visa sponsor, we pride ourselves on providing a quality experience by encouraging and enabling Greenheart staff, participants, Local Coordinators, and host families to work together on projects that promote environmentalism and sustainability.

What we’re looking for:
The High School Programs Department is looking to hire a Program Manager who will work with international sending partners and regional staff to manage pre and on program support of high school exchange students, oversee day to day operations of our volunteer initiatives within the program and assist in the everyday administration of the office and program.

Some things you might do as a Program Manager:

  • Learn and understand application intake process for a dynamic and engaging exchange program for high school students coming to the U.S. for 5-10 months
  • Utilize our custom database and maintain student records in the Department of Homeland Security Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)
  • Facilitate the lines of communication across the US and the globe between Greenheart, its representatives and international partners including the simultaneous management of multiple expectations.
  • Regular counseling and problem solving with students, host families, our field network and international sending partners
  • Assisting in the development or revision of CCI Greenheart procedures, policies and program materials.
  • Reviewing and approving student volunteer hours, assisting with locating volunteer projects, recognizing and rewarding students for their volunteer service
    Attending annual international conferences and as well as the possibility of additional international travel as needed (less than 10%)

Some qualifications you should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university
  • Minimum of one year administrative experience and/or customer service experience
  • Efficiency with data entry and a keen eye for detail
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Talent for organizing and prioritizing multiple tasks
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Comfort and aptitude learning new software and understanding work flow processes
  • High level of general computer skills and Microsoft Office Suite proficiency
  • Ability to communicate professionally and diplomatically over the phone, via e-mail, and in person
  • Possess a great deal of tact and diplomacy and ability to resolve conflicts that may arise
  • Outgoing, flexible personality with a willingness to learn; applicant should be an exceptional team player, proactive, diligent, positive and a creative self-starter
  • Genuine desire to contribute to an organization that promotes cultural exchange and environmental consciousness
  • Experience living or working in another country or an international setting is a plus
  • Previous knowledge and understanding of the SEVIS system and exchange visitor visas is ideal

Summer Group Coordinator – Short-term Groups and Homestays

Type of Position: Temporary, part-time
Location: Work at home; around the U.S.
CCI Greenheart seeks candidates in suburbs of major to mid-size cities to coordinate short-term Group Homestay Programs. We are open to programs throughout the US, but are actively seeking coordinators for summer 2017 groups in suburban areas (up to two hours from downtown) of the following cities:

On the Group Homestay Program, approximately 10 – 20 international high school students come to the United States for a 2-4 week period with the goal of improving their English and getting to know American culture. ESL Student Recruiter – Greenheart English Camp

Greenheart English Camp is a three week ESL summer camp designed exclusively for international teenagers with at least 2 years of English experience. Recruiters refer and provide initial screening to potential applicants and can receive a cash incentive for each student who is accepted and attends the program.

Internship & Volunteer Opportunities

Greenheart Travel Internship for Teach English & Work Abroad Programs

Type: Unpaid internship, temporary, 12 weeks with possible extension for an additional 10 weeks
Hours: 15 hours per week minimum; flexible daily hours available Monday – Friday, 9:00a.m. – 5:30p.m.

Start Date: ASAPThe Greenheart Travel Volunteer Intern will assist management and staff with data entry, interviewing candidates, phones, and various other administrative duties. Some of the intern’s duties may include, and are not limited to, the following:Program Coordination

  • Assist Program Managers with daily administration of Greenheart Travel Teach & Work Abroad programs
  • Review and process Teach program applications
  • Ensure timely receipt of participant applications and follow up as instructed by Program Managers
  • Assist in creating web content to update existing pages or to create new ones
  • Interview candidates who have submitted applications via Skype
  • Interface with participants when necessary on aspects of program administration
  • Write and update program orientation materials as needed

Required skills:
Volunteers should be creative, self-directed, and flexible with excellent written and oral communication skills. Outgoing personality and experience with and enthusiasm for international travel. Excellent computer skills with competence in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Photoshop, WordPress a plus; knowledge of social media outlets helpful

Part-Time Volunteer Shop Assistant

Responsibilities:

  • Greets customers in a friendly manner, educating all new customers about our mission to support Fair Trade, eco-friendly, and local social mission based enterprises.
  • Learns about and offers additional commentary to customers as needed on the stories and ethics behind certain products.
  • Rings up sales at the register (if comfortable learning) and/or helps to wrap and package purchases for customers.
  • Helps to restock products and supplies and re-merchandise products on the floor as needed.
  • Help set up/break down displays, talk to customers, and make sales at offsite events (sales events away from the store).
  • May help with other duties such as counting and labeling products and cleaning.

Desired Qualities:

  • Either prior knowledge of, and education in, Fair Trade/sustainability or a strong desire to learn more.
  • A passion for improving the working conditions of people around the world, preserving the environment, and educating people about the stories behind the products they purchase.
  • Some retail experience a plus, but not necessary. Volunteers must be willing and open to learn the basics of retail in a non-profit.
  • Able to climb stairs to the basement to restock products.

Time Commitment:

  • Preferred commitment of at least 3 months of volunteering at Greenheart Shop
  • At least 2-4 shifts per month of 4 hours each, with flexibility for school/work schedules
  • Volunteer candidates will be scheduled as needed based on their availability and the shop’s need, generally during store hours of Mon. – Fri. 11am – 7pm, Sat. 10am-6pm, and Sun. 10am-5pm. We are especially in need of volunteer assistance at our offsite sales events, which usually occur on weekends at churches or festivals around the city of Chicago.

Summer I or Summer II Marketing and Outreach Intern

The Work and Travel department within CCI Greenheart is dedicated to providing cultural exchange opportunities for international university students who come to the United States to work entry-level position during their academic break. Through its partnerships with several host organizations and international agencies, Work and Travel is able to sponsor over 6,000 international students each year.

Duties:
Responsibilities of the Intern may include, but are not limited to:

  • Research community information and track testimonials
  • Update Job Fair Handbooks as well as other marketing materials
  • Assist in updating the website
  • Assist with social media platforms to ensure they are up-to-date and on trend
  • Research methods of interacting with stakeholders on social media outlets (i.e.: Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Snapchat)
  • Track consumer behavior through Google Analytics and mass emails
  • Edit and draft blog postings to WordPress site
  • Assist in updating and photo gallery
  • Assist with the execution and follow up for various trips
  • Assist with any urgent and unexpected items
  • Perform an occasional data entry

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in progress or higher. Candidates who are studying in International Education, and/or Marketing and Outreach are preferred.
