Korea offers some of the best benefits packages for English teachers in the world, with high salaries, free housing and generous amounts of paid vacation. Greenheart Travel has been selected by the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korean National Institute of International Education to offer this program to qualified candidates. There is no fee for this program; the expenses are absorbed by the Korean government in support of its goals to foster international education and cross-cultural understanding. Teachers enjoy rent free accommodations and a tax-deferred salary that is plenty to cover their living expenses plus save a substantial amount for travel, paying off loans or saving for a house. In addition to a generous monthly salary, teachers also receive entrance and exit bonuses that are nearly equivalent to one month's salary.

How much can I expect to save?

Frugal teachers can save as much as $12,000 USD a year. Those who prefer a more extravagant lifestyle in Korea can still expect to save $5,000 USD or more. The salary is tax free, housing is provided, and living expenses in Korea are low.  

What if I don't speak Korean?

No problem - Korean language skills are not required, just a BA/BS degree and native English speaking skills.

Requirements:

  • Native English speaker
  • BA/BS degree in any field
  • Between the ages of 20 and 55
  • Citizenship in a country where the primary spoken language is English

Teacher responsibilities

All English teachers with jobs in Korean Public Schools work under the guidance of a supervisor designated by a specific Provincial Office of Education (POE). Teachers are responsible for conducting English classes in cooperation with Korean teachers. Teachers assist with the development of teaching materials and activities related to English language education.

Teachers should expect to work 35-40 hours a week. This includes actual classroom time of no more than 22 classes per week, plus time for lesson planning, faculty meetings and possibly supervising extracurricular and sports activities.

Placements

Teaching placements are available in urban and rural locations throughout South Korea. Most placements are in secondary schools (grades 7-12), though a few primary school placements are also available.

Program Benefits

  • Paid vacation: Teachers receive national holidays and public school holidays plus 18 additional days of paid vacation
  • Free single furnished housing (utilities not included)
  • Salary of 1.8 million KRW to 2.5 million KRW per month (about $1,600 to $2,200 USD, tax-deferred)*, depending on experience and qualifications
  • Entrance Allowance of 1.3 million KRW to purchase a one-way ticket, paid upon arrival (about $1,150 USD)*
  • Exit Allowance of 1.3 million KRW (about $1,150 USD)*
  • Settlement allowance of 300,000 KRW or about $270 USD*, paid within first month of contract
  • Training in Korea  
  • One month salary severance pay upon completion of contract
  • Paid vacation for 18 working days + 13-15 National Holidays
  • Accident and medical insurance
  • Rent-free accommodation in a studio apartment. Your salary is intended to cover the cost of your meals.

* Based on current exchange rate of 1 USD = 1,132 KRW (Korean Won)

Orientation

All EPIK English Language Instructors (ELIs) are required to attend a mandatory 10 day professional training session.The orientation period is not included in the term of employment and as such is unpaid. Teachers will learn about the Korean Public School system, their role as English teachers, living in Korea, and many other useful topics. Attendance at orientation is a mandatory condition of employment. Housing and meals are provided during the orientation period.

Dates, Duration and Application Deadlines for 2010 - 2011

Program length: 1 year (52 weeks) beginning in September, 2010 or 6 months beginning in February 2011.
