Day Care Center for Children with HIV (Ages 18+)

Project Details
This day care for children ages 6-16 years old offers daily care and attention to those who live with the reality of AIDS or HIV. Some of the children have lost family members due to this disease and others have been infected themselves. In the center, the children receive lunch, an afternoon snack, homework support, and enjoy a variety of workshops that include dancing, singing, handicrafts, computers, sexual education, and English classes. All children come from very impoverished neighborhoods and have received little formal education.

Volunteer Responsibilities
Volunteers are needed to help with any and all of the workshops and can even create their own! Teaching positive values and hygiene habits are very important to providing basic tools that the children will need to live healthy lives. Volunteers will also help to organize other recreational activities as well as provide academic support through tutoring.

Location
The day-care center is located in the Parque Patricios neighborhood in Buenos Aires City. All volunteers will be taken to their host family upon arrival and given an orientation within the first few days.

Accommodations and Meals
Volunteers will stay with carefully screened host families for the duration of the program. Two meals a day with your host family are included in your stay.
**No meals are served on Sundays.

Transportation and Travel Arrangements
All travel arrangements must be booked according to Greenheart Travel instructions. Booking travel is your responsibility, but we are more than happy to help you as needed. A transfer service will be booked for you that will take you from the airport directly to your accommodations upon your arrival. Depending on the location of your host family the bus ride to your project will be within 20-45 minutes, and Greenheart Travel does not cover any bus fare used in transit to the work site.

Local Support
Greenheart Travel always provides you with a thorough network of support before departure and during your time abroad. You will be provided with pre-departure orientation materials that will walk you through every step of your program. Your local coordinator, host family, and volunteer site supervisor are more than happy to address questions or difficulties that you may have at anytime during your program.

Dates, Duration and Application Deadlines
Volunteers may join this program at any time throughout the year. Please note that projects have limited availability during the months of January and February. Applications are due at least 8 weeks before your intended date of departure. Volunteers must begin and end their project on a Monday.

Requirements
Minimum commitment of 6 weeks. Experience or education in counseling, teaching and/or childcare is helpful, but not required. An intermediate level of Spanish is required. Spanish lessons are available prior to the volunteer project in Buenos Aires for an additional fee.
