Maori Culture Course in New Zealand (Ages 18+)

Volunteer_NewZealand_Content

This special program gives participants an inside view of New Zealand’s indigenous culture. The program consists of a course in Maori cultural traditions.

Maori Culture Course
The modern Maori are descendents of Polynesian immigrants who, it is believed, came to New Zealand in canoes between the 9th and 13th centuries. Today the Maori account for about 10% of the population and the influence of their fascinating culture is still evident throughout modern New Zealand. This two week course, offered through Wellington Business School, introduces participants to Maori history, native language, and unique cultural traditions such as wood carving, weaving, traditional Haka war dances and hangi, the traditional method of cooking meat and vegetables in underground ovens. The classes are non-academic and center around activities and field trips. Participants spend one night during the program in a marae, a traditional Maori community center and meeting place, often decorated with elaborate carvings.
