Paris Language School for Adults (Ages 17+)

LS_France_Content

Just the mere mention of the name “Paris” evokes fashion, art, history, romance, and above all, European sophistication. The Seine River meanders through this “City of Light” that has been immortalized by poets, painters and writers throughout history. In your spare time, you will want to visit the Louvre and Musee D’Orsay for the chance to see the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Gauguin, Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh first-hand. In addition to visiting museums, you can people-watch under the Eiffel Tower, stroll along the Seine, shop in fashionable boutiques and linger late into the night in cozy cafes--all Parisian experiences that no one should miss!

The School
The school is located near the Eiffel Tower and the Champs Elysees. The school also offers free internet access, a free-access media lab, public phones, and refreshment and coffee machines. The school’s large cafeteria is perfect for meals and meeting other students. There is a maximum of 12 students per class and participants must be 18+.

Course Schedule
Classes are scheduled Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 12:30 in the morning, 1:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon, or 4:30 to 7:30 in the evening. Each student's course schedule is determined by the results of a placement test administered at the start of the program. You'll have the afternoons and weekends free to participate in activities and excursion planned by the school or just to hang out with new friends and your family.

Location
The school is located on the second floor of a typical Parisian building in the heart of Paris, near the Champs Elysees and the Eiffel Tower.

Accommodations and Meals
Participants live with carefully screened host families up to a one hour commute from the school. Students usually take a bus or train to and from school.

Teaching Methods
Get ready for a varied lesson plan that really keeps things interesting! The main goal is to get you to communicate effectively in French by the time you leave, and with activities that get you interacting more than you ever would in a typical college course. Listening and growing accustomed to an authentic French accent is important, and this is accomplished through audio-visual materials, film extracts, television and radio programs, and songs. Your instructors will have you speaking to your classmates and peers by assigning group activities and playing games, and of course there will be lessons focused on perfecting your grammar and writing. You will come away from the program with a much deeper knowledge of the French culture and a more advanced language level.

Dates
You may start any Monday throughout the year, even if you are a complete beginner. The school is closed on some national holidays, but open during the Christmas season.

Activities and Excursions
Exciting cultural activities and excursions are planned by the language school so that you may experience Paris outside the classroom. The school organizes free guided tours of Parisian neighborhoods and points of interest several days a week, which are free for all students. Other excursions are provided at an additional cost.  Some examples of these are:

• Museum visits
• Notre Dame
• Versailles
• Theater workshops and fashion shows
• Chartres Cathedral

Orientation
Upon confirmation, you will be given materials to help you get acquainted with French culture as well as useful travel tips. We are there for you every step of the way to answer any questions or concerns you have before departure. Before setting you on your way, we will conduct a pre-departure orientation with you to go over all the details. Upon arrival you will have another short orientation to introduce you to the school staff and facilities and to discuss a general course outline. You will also be given a short placement test to make sure you are assigned to the appropriate class.

Local Support
The language school staff will be there for you if you have any questions or difficulties, and we encourage all students to openly communicate any issues that may arise. You will be given emergency contact numbers to use in case you require immediate assistance in France. In addition, your family in your home country will be provided with our toll free emergency line for use outside of office hours in case they need to contact you immediately.

Travel Arrangements and Transportation
All travel arrangements must be booked according to our instructions, and should be taken care of after you receive confirmation of your program. Booking travel is your responsibility, but we are more than happy to help you as needed. Transfers to and from the nearest airport or train station may be arranged for you at an additional cost.

Most placements are not within walking distance to the school, and will most likely require public transportation in order to get there. Paris has a wonderful train and bus system, making it convenient and easy to travel within the city. Greenheart Travel does not cover any bus or train fare during your program.

Requirements
Participants must be at least 18 for this program. It is helpful to know some basic French phrases in order to communicate with your host family and get around the city. Flexibility and keeping a sense of humor will also allow you to adjust to your new Parisian life style, as traveling to a new place and speaking a new language may bring about some interesting challenges.
