Planting Trees for Global Youth Service Day

Eight CCI exchange students along with their local coordinator planted elevent trees at a local wildlife refuge for Global Youth Service Day.  
 

 

 

 

Mural Painting at a Children's Hospital

CCI exchange students along with their local coordinator painted a mural of the eco-system and endanged animals for the radiology room at a local children's hospital.
 

 

  

 

 

 

Global Village Enrichment Program in New York 

April 2011
CCI exchange students along with their local coordinator participated in a Global Village Enrichment Program in their local school district in New York.  For this program, AYP students paired up with 5th graders to teach them about their countries and unique cultural experiences.
 

  

 

State Park Clean-up in Pennsylvania  

April 2011
CCI exchange students along with their local coordinator cleaned up debris that had built up in the stream during the winter months. This effort allowed the water to flow much more easily through the park's water-powered mill. The team also worked to remove invasive plants around the stream and pathways.
 

 

 

Citrus Picking in Florida

CCI exchange students along with their local coordinator and host families participated in a citrus picking event. The group went around to people's homes in their community with citrus trees and collected the fruit to give to a church food bank.

 

 

 CCI Staff Volunteer at Soup Kitchen
January 2011
CCI's National Office Staff spent their Tuesday evenings in January volunteering at the St. Thomas of Canterbury Soup Kitchen in Chicago. The soup kitchen typically serves over a hundred homeless people a meal.

 

 

Tree planting in Savannah, Georgia

CCI exchange students, host families and local coordinators planted trees with United Way and other environmental groups in this regional event on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

 

 

CCI’s Going Greenheart Tour: Recycling Park City December 2010
Work and Travel students working in Park City, Utah spent the afternoon volunteering at Recycle Park City as a part of CCI’s Going Greenheart Tour. Students helped organize recyclables and got to know their CCI representatives Adra and Beth!

 

Reviving Oregon Streams and Salmon Populations
November 2010
Greenheart club members helped revive Columbia river tributaries in Oregon by throwing dead fish carcasses into streams. The dead fish carcasses give important nutrients to river ecosystem.

 

Salvation Army Drive at Syracuse Football Game
October 2010
CCI exchange students participated in a Greenheart project by fundraising and collecting donations on behalf of the Salvation Army at the beginning of a Syracuse football game. The donations will benefit 3,500 low income families in the region for the holidays.

  

Greenheart Flash Yoga Performance
September 30, 2010
Greenheart participants caught Chicago by surprise when they performed a yoga routine at Chicago’s Union Station.

  

Chicago Growing Power
September 2010
CCI and Greenheart employees partnered up with Chicago’s urban garden Growing Power and volunteered a couple afternoons pulling weeds and digging up vegetables.

 

Oregon Beach Clean Up
September 2010
Six CCI exchange students gathered along with some host family members to clean up the Oregon coastline as part of Stop Oregon Littering and Vandalism (SOLV) for a Greenheart activity.

 

Living La Vida Verde
June 19, 2010
In the 2nd annual eco-urbanite celebration organized by CCI and Greenheart, Chicagoans helped clean up the beach along Lake Michigan and participated in workshops about the environment.

 

 

Spring Break in Hawaii
March 2010
While on the island of Oahu, CCI exchange students got to learn and volunteer at great sites like Hanauma Bay, Organic Farms in Malalaulima, and Waikiki Aquarium.

 

Spring Break in Portland
March 2010
CCI exchange students spent a week visiting tourist spots and environmental sites in Portland, Oregon. The best part of their trip—volunteering to preserve forests.

 

 

Living La Vida Verde
April 2009
In CCI & Greenheart’s first annual Living La Vida Verde event, the CCI and Greenheart community in Chicago joined together to clean up the Oak Street beach along Lake Michigan.

Spring Break in New Orleans

CCI exchange students living across the U.S. gathered for a week of environmental and social community service in rebuilding New Orleans. The students also got to experience some of the rich traditions of New Orleans like Mardi Gras and jazz.
