This is our 4th year of Greenheart Spring Break. Past destinations included New Orleans, LA, Honolulu, HI, and Portland, OR, and we are looking forward to adding the Florida Everglades to this list of exciting destinations.

Florida Everglades 2012

What are the Everglades you ask? They are the largest subtropical wetlands in all of the United States. The Everglades are home to many rare and endangered species. It has been designated a World Heritage Site and Wetland of International Importance, significant to all people of the world.

Check out this video to get a quick introduction into the Everglades:

The Everglades are also a delicate environment, always in danger. Much of the area that the Everglades covered has been taken over by farms and urban areas. There also have been problems with water quality, pollution, and invasive species. There is now a major effort underway to preserve and conserve this unique habitat.

On the trip you will get to experience it all. We will all stay and play together in the Everglades Hostel. We will come to know the Everglades and Southern Florida by getting our hands dirty and spending time exploring and volunteering in the Everglades National Park, as well as Biscayne National Park. We will come face-to-face with crocodiles and alligators, be exposed to lots of native and exotic plants and animals, and have a blast! We will also get to spend a day soaking up the sun in Miami and experiencing the culture of the region. Other activities include snorkeling in the Florida Keys and visiting the mysterious Coral Castle!
