Youth Sports Programs
Project Details
Volunteers will help coach soccer and other sports for young Tanzanians as a means of providing a positive recreational outlet for teens living in communities deeply affected by poverty and AIDS. The program helps to raise teens’ self esteem and provides a safe and supportive social environment. It also gives the youth a chance to engage with volunteers, break down cultural barriers, and learn about each other.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Volunteers will coach sports for a group of teenage youth. This will involve physical activity, leading practices, teambuilding workshops, and fostering cross-cultural exchange. Above all, volunteers are there to be positive mentors in the lives of the youth.
Location
The project has three locations: Tanga, Pangani, and the island of Zanzibar, all located in northeast Tanzania near the Kenyan border.
Accommodations and Meals
Volunteers will stay in clean hostels located near the project for the duration of the program. Volunteers can also request to stay with a carefully screened host family when available. Breakfast and dinner are included in your stay.
Requirements
There is no language requirement to participate in the program although learning some basic Swahili before you go is helpful! Volunteers must be in good physical condition. Experience working with teenage youth is helpful but not required.
