Organic Farming Project Tabacundo

About the Project

These small organic farms are picturesque in all forms; from the green rolling hills to the snow-capped volcano, Antisana, that you can see on the horizon, this experience is sure to take your breath away. Growing organic fruits and vegetables is very important to these two family-owned farms. One farm, located at a higher elevation in the hills, cultivates wheat, herbs, vegetables, and cuy (guinea pigs). The change in climate and altitude allows the farm at the bottom of the hills to grow mostly fruits. These farmers are also part of the Centro de Acopio, located a few miles down the road in the center of Tabacundo, sending their extra fresh produce and grains to sell to the community at affordable prices. The Center also focuses on educating the community about the importance of eating healthy, organic foods.

Volunteer Responsibilities

All volunteers will be working on the farms helping with the day to day responsibilities of planting, cultivating, fertilizing, feeding the cuy, and tending to other animals. They will also learn about the organic growing process as well as sell goods at the Centro de Acopio. Volunteers will also have the chance to get involved in any current community education campaigns.

Location

The organic farms are located in Tabacundo, a small town on the way north to Ibarra from Quito. All volunteers will be met at the airport in Quito, given an orientation and overnight stay, and then taken to the bus station the following day to travel to Tabacundo.

Accommodations and Meals

Accommodation during the project is on site with the carefully screened host family who runs the small farms. All meals with your host family are included during your stay.

Requirements

Volunteers must enjoy working outdoors and must be interested in farming. Experience and/or education in biology, ecology or environmental studies is helpful but not required. Basic Spanish is helpful. Spanish lessons are available prior to the volunteer project in Quito for an additional fee.
