Hospital in Ambato
About the Project
One of the few hospitals in the area that provides affordable and quality care to the community, the doctors, staff, and volunteers work hard to attend to the hundreds of patients that line the waiting room each day. With many services specializing in mother and infant care, it is not uncommon to have a ward filled with newborns and recovering mothers. The hospital also has a large clinic that tends to the daily needs of the sick and injured.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Help is needed in all hospital departments. Depending upon the level of Spanish, previous experiences and interest of the volunteer, he or she could help with intake and general patient exams or assisting with minor surgeries and emergency room traumas. This placement is ideal for medical students or volunteers interested in studying medicine or becoming doctors.
Location
The hospital is located in Ambato, about 2.5 hours south of Quito. All volunteers will be met at the airport in Quito, given an orientation and overnight stay, and then taken to the bus station the following day to travel to Ambato.
Accommodations and Meals
Accommodation during the project is with a carefully screened host family located in Ambato. All meals with your host family are included during your stay.
Requirements
Experience and/or education in medicine is highly preferred; exceptions may be made on a case by case basis for those interested in exploring a career in medicine. An intermediate level of Spanish is required. Spanish lessons are available prior to the volunteer project in Quito for an additional fee.
