This country off the coast of southern China is much more than a leading producer of high tech consumer goods, as it is known to most westerners. Taiwan is a stunningly picturesque tropical island, dubbed Formosa (beautiful island) by the Portuguese explorers who arrived in the 16th century.
Taiwanese culture is a fascinating mix of indigenous Hakka, Taiwanese and Chinese traditions. Most Taiwanese are descendents of mainland Chinese, and it is undeniable that Taiwan is heavily influenced by its mainland roots. The official language is Mandarin, and the religions practiced by the Taiwanese include Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, as well as Christianity. You’ll find every type of regional Chinese cooking style in the local cuisine, from the spicy Szechuan dishes of western China to the savory pastries and dumplings of southern Cantonese dim sum.
The Taiwanese people themselves are friendly and welcoming, and love to share their beautiful country and culture with visitors.
