 About
the size of California, Sweden sits between Norway
to the west and Finland to the east. Most of the population
lives in the southern region bordering the Baltic
sea; the north is dominated by an immense and breathtaking
natural wilderness unrivaled anywhere else in western
Europe. It comes as no surprise that Swedes relish
outdoor activities, from skiing and hiking in the mountains
and majestic pine and birch forests of the north to
swimming and tennis along the sandy beaches in the
south. Sweden’s historic castles and ruins rival
those of its more touristed neighbors, France and
Italy, and its capital, Stockholm, is celebrated as
one of Europe’s most beautiful cities and boasts
no fewer than 10 royal castles.
High
School in Sweden
With its combination
of stunning natural beauty, safe communities and family
oriented lifestyle, Sweden is the ideal destination
for a high school program. You will be enrolled in
a Swedish gymnasium, or upper secondary school, where
you will have a choice of several “majors,”
such as humanities, technology, or natural sciences.
After school, most Swedish teens enjoy club and sports
activities.
Most placements are in small towns and villages in the southern part of the country, near Stockholm. However, students may be placed anywhere in Sweden.
Most
Swedish families have one or two children, and often
both parents work outside the home. Swedish families
tend to be active and enjoy sports and outdoor activities
together.
Program Requirements
Prior study of Swedish is helpful, but not required.
