Mexico has long been a favorite destination among
North American tourists looking for a warm winter
escape, but this vibrant, colorful country offers
much more than just sunshine, sandy beaches and fruity
drinks. Mexico offers something for everyone, whether
your interests tend toward exploring ancient and mysterious
Mayan ruins, exploring sleepy colonial towns, hiking
in unspoiled, remote canyons, participating in water
sports such as diving, fishing and kayaking, or, of
course, relaxing on beautiful beaches. Music, dancing
and fiestas are a regular part of life and make for
a lively and fun cultural experience.
The
food in Mexico may surprise you. Fresh ingredients,
homemade tortillas and sauces, and a greater variety
of dishes and flavors overall combine for a mouthwatering
cuisine that is very different from what is found
in most Mexican restaurants in the U.S.
Outside the cities, Mexican families tend to be large,
and extended families are common. Great importance
is placed on family unity and close relationships
among family members. The divorce rate is still low,
largely due to the influence of the Catholic faith,
which is by far the most prominent religion in Mexico.
Children often remain with their parents until marriage,
so it is not uncommon to find adult children still
living at home. Mexicans tend to be very hospitable
and typically welcome spontaneous guests. Socializing
is an important part of Mexican culture and most Mexicans
make friendships a priority.

School in Mexico
CCI’s language school in Mexico is in the city
of Cuernavaca, located in a pleasant valley about
an hour drive from Mexico City. It is the capital
of the state of Morelos with about 450,000 permanent
residents. Because of its year-round mild climate
(average temperature 75°) and its lush and beautiful
flora, Cuernavaca is known as the “City of Eternal
Spring”. The atmosphere tends to be that of
a big town, rather than a big city. The people are
friendly, and life is relaxed and easy going. The
main square, Zócalo, is always alive. It is
surrounded by sidewalk cafés, restaurants and
bookstores. Street musicians (mariachis) and outdoor
markets are also prevalent.
The
school is located in a quiet residential area of Cuernavaca.
Landscaped grounds, fountains, swimming pools and
an outdoor patio/café contribute a quiet and
pleasant atmosphere. Students that attend the school
are between the ages of 13 and 80, and come from all
over the world.
Classes are taught by experienced, well-qualified,
Spanish-speaking instructors. The class sizes are
very small, only five students per instructor. Classes
may take place outside of the classrooms. For example,
students may go on walking trips to local markets
and shops with their instructors to practice their
Spanish.
Typical Activities and Excursions:
- Indian Village of Tepoztlan
- Pyramids of Xochicalco
- Indian markets
- Natural springs
