Germany
borders nine countries in the heart of Europe and
enjoys a temperate climate. In addition to alpine
mountains, the German landscape includes wide valleys,
rolling hills and immense lowlands. Forty percent
of the country is forested, making hiking a very popular
pastime among Germans.
The country varies greatly culturally
and linguistically as well as geographically. You
will find that the Germans in the southern state of
Bavaria speak with a different dialect than those
of the north. Such differences add to the charm and
mystique of this European country. Germans enjoy their
leisure time, and most cities have professional orchestras
and opera houses. Germans like to travel in their
own country and abroad during their vacations. Being
in the heart of Europe, Germany has long been a theater
for great art, literature, and philosophy. Germans
are considered hard working and industrious, and the
country is one of the top five economic powers in
the world. You will find Germans enjoy discussing
anything, and readily attend theater, concerts, and
sporting events.
 High
School in Germany
There are two types
of schools in Germany. The Hauptschule prepares students
for vocational careers, while Gymnasium prepares students
for entrance into German universities. Typically you
will attend a Gymnasium. German teachers stress class
participation, discussion, and independent thinking.
There are different core courses that you will be
able to choose from, such as math, science or the
humanities. Teens are able to participate in a variety
of sports, organizations, and clubs both at school
and in the community.
Placements are made throughout
the country. No matter where you live, you will find
your family active and welcoming. Family size and
makeup vary a great deal in Germany, but women usually
work outside the home and you may have a larger extended
family than in the States. Your host parents will
probably give you a little more independence than
what you may have at home; however, you are expected
to be responsible. Honesty and mutual respect are
expected among family members.

Language
Schools in Germany
By far the best way to learn German is by studying
it where it is spoken. CCI offers language school
programs in two of Germany’s most exciting cities.
Munich, Germany
Located near the Alps and close to the Austrian and
Swiss borders, Munich is a
sight to see. The city is the capital of the state
of Bavaria, which maintains its own
sense of character and culture apart from the rest
of Germany. The area is
often considered more relaxed and quaint than other
parts of the country. Because
of its close proximity (70 miles) to the Alps, Munich
offers numerous hiking possibilities. Castles and
monasteries dot the surrounding countryside. CCI recommends
Munich for those particularly interested in spectacular
natural scenery and Baroque style architecture.
The school sits in the heart of Munich, across from
the central train station. The newly equipped facilities
include media rooms, a library, lounge, cafeteria,
and landscaped roof terrace where you can play table
tennis and eat outside. There are 11 classrooms and
a
maximum of 8–12 participants per class. Participants
must be 17+.
