Don’t be fooled by this country’s small size and low profile; Belgium is just as varied and fascinating in history, culture and cuisine as its showier neighbors France and Germany. Belgium is home to impressive gothic cathedrals and castles fit for a fairy tale princess, complete with towers and moats, as well as what some call the most decadent chocolates in the world. Belgium is also the true origin of what has mistakenly been called the “French” fry, and today you can buy the light crispy frites in paper cones on the street as well as in virtually any restaurant.
Belgium has a unique multi-faceted culture, as it is divided along ethnic and linguistic lines. The northern region is Dutch-speaking Flanders, while to the south lies French speaking Wallonia. The result is that most Belgians are bilingual, though their pride in their roots and language is fierce and a robust rivalry persists between the two regions. Many Belgians also speak English, as it is widely used as a lingua franca to help bridge the divide between Flanders and Wallonia.
High
School in Belgium
A high school program in Belgium is a unique opportunity to experience the Belgian culture and lifestyle as locals do. Education is a priority to Belgians, and schools are academically rigorous. You may be placed in a public or a private school. There are different core courses that you will be able to choose from, such as math, science or the humanities. Teens are able to participate in a variety of sports, organizations, and clubs both at school and in the community.
Placements are mainly in small towns or the countryside. You may choose a placement in either the French speaking region in the south or the Dutch speaking region of the north. No matter where you are placed, you will find your family will welcome you warmly. Like their Dutch neighbors, Belgians are fond of cycling and most own bikes, so you will probably do some biking during your stay.
