Stunning
natural scenery, unparalleled beaches, endless sunshine,
unique wildlife, fascinating indigenous cultures,
world class cosmopolitan cities-it isn’t hard
to see why Australia is one of the world’s most
popular tourist destinations. The world’s smallest
continent, Australia is about the size of the U.S.
and varies greatly geographically. Because it is located
in the Southern Hemisphere, Australia’s seasons
are reversed from ours, although most areas are quite
temperate. Tasmania is colder, and the mountains of
Victoria and the New South Wales do see snow.
The Aborigines, Australia's first
inhabitants, created a rich nomadic culture of art
and oral traditions. There is a growing movement within
Australia to preserve this indigenous culture located
in the central desert regions.
You
will find that most Australians live in urban areas.
The rugged Australian in the Outback is just a stereotype.
In fact, almost 90 percent of the population live
in the developed areas along the coast.
Australians are known world–wide
for being laid back and friendly, and the lifestyle
tends to be more relaxed and easy going. Australians
take family life and responsibilities seriously, but
they also know how to enjoy their leisure time. Australians
do spend much of their time outdoors, and sports such
as Australian football, cricket and sailing are national
pastimes.
