Environmental Conservation and Eco-Tourism Project

Project Details

This community-based eco-tourism project is located in a small village on the outskirts of Tanga. Companies in Tanga have been mining here for many years, marring the natural Hutbeauty of the landscape with unsightly quarries. The project aims to transform abandoned quarries into a sustainable eco tourism destination, bringing the area back to its natural state and helping to alleviate the poverty of the local community. Once completed, the park will generate income for the community and improve the quality of life of local residents.

Volunteer Responsibilities

Volunteers are needed to help with reforestation and general preservation, quarry restoration, environmental education and outreach, and identification of local flora and fauna.

Location

The project is located in the coastal town of Tanga, close to the Kenyan border and five treeshours from the major city of Dar es Salaam.

Accommodations and Meals

Volunteers will stay in clean hostels located near the project for the duration of the program. Volunteers can also request to stay with a carefully screened host family when available. Breakfast and dinner are included in your stay.

Requirements

There is no language requirement to participate in the program although learning some basic Swahili before you go is helpful! Volunteers must be prepared to work outside and engage in hands on conservation work.
