Home for Abandonded Women and Children
About the Project
We believe in giving young girls second chances. As a home for abandoned young mothers, girls, and babies, the project focuses on helping to provide for their daily needs, aid in their personal development and education, and to give them the chance to experience adolescence. By teaching these girls the value of education, hard work, and responsibility, volunteers help to prepare them for an independent and successful future.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Much help is needed with after-school tutoring and organizing recreational activities and educational workshops for the girls. These can include arts projects, music lessons, dances, sports, self-esteem builders, and life skills. Volunteers are encouraged to be open-minded and flexible. Above all, volunteers will be role-models for these girls showing them lots of care and support.
Location
The project is located about 20 minutes by bus from downtown Cuenca, a large city about 10 hours south of Quito. All volunteers will be met at the airport in Quito, given an orientation and overnight stay, and then taken to the bus station the following day to travel to Cuenca.
Accommodations and Meals
Accommodation during the project is with a carefully screened host family located in Cuenca. All meals with your host family are included during your stay.
Requirements
Experience or education in counseling, teaching, arts/craft and recreation, and/or childcare is helpful, but not required, depending on the duties the volunteer will be expected to perform. An intermediate level of Spanish is required. Spanish lessons are available prior to the volunteer project in Quito for an additional fee.
