Primary School in Puerto Quito
About the Project
As you drop in elevation from the mountainous Andes region, you will find the small town of Puerto Quito with a humid coastal climate. The primary school located just outside the town square is small yet crowded with local children. There are a few run-down classrooms, concrete soccer field, and a limited availability of teachers. Students are very eager to learn everything from math to reading to English.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Volunteers are needed to help tutor children in small groups, aid the teacher with classroom projects, teach English, organize recreational activities, engage in community renewal projects with the families, and even given the chance to teach their own class!
Location
Puerto Quito is located about 3 hours north of Quito on the way to Esmareldas. All volunteers will be met at the airport in Quito, given an orientation and overnight stay, and then taken to the bus station the following morning to travel to Puerto Quito.
Accommodations and Meals
Accommodation during the project is with a carefully screened host family located a short distance away from the school. All meals with your host family are included during your stay.
Requirements
Experience or education in counseling, teaching and/or childcare is helpful, but not required, depending on the duties the volunteer expects to perform. An intermediate level of Spanish is required. Spanish lessons are available prior to the volunteer project in Quito for an additional fee.
