Ghana

Peaceful and welcoming, English-speaking Ghana is one of five West African countries that border the Gulf of Guinea. Ghanaians are rightfully proud of their rich history: their country’s lush rainforests and tranquil beaches were home to the Ashanti kings who once ruled one of Africa’s greatest empires.

Travelers find Ghanaians to be a warm and generous people with a strong sense of family and community. Extended families are the norm, and it is common to find several generations sharing one household. Family relations are of primary importance in Ghanaian culture, and Ghanaians will routinely put the interests of the family above their own personal desires.

Ghanaians tend to be extremely sociable and friendly, and very welcoming of strangers. Social relations are central to Ghanaian culture, and it is common for friends to drop in for visits unannounced and linger for hours, eating, drinking and talking. Life is relaxed here, and the slow pace can take some getting used to for Westerners, though it can also be a welcome respite from the often frantic pace of life at home.
